NC State Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) and its university partners maintain protocols that ensure the health and safety of our campus community. In line with EPA standards, known contaminants are addressed before an area is disturbed or when the materials are no longer in good condition and pose a risk to those who work, live and learn within university buildings.

Submitting Concerns

If you are concerned about a space you frequent on campus, please report the hazard immediately through our Ask EHS process.
If this is an emergency, please call 911.

Our Process

Every concern submitted to the university is triaged and responded to by EHS and its partners within NC State Facilities, the Office of General Counsel, and Emergency Management and Mission Continuity. Our response to concerns are guided by EPA recommendations and standards, and are documented in the university’s management plans.

In addition to continuous monitoring and investigating as routine EHS work, the team also designates someone as the university’s program manager for each hazardous material management plan and regularly provides review for abatement designs and specifications. Below is an overview of what happens when a concern is submitted. Depending on the situation and urgency, our team’s response may vary.

Typical Next Steps

  • When a concern is received through one of several reporting options, EHS assesses the report and gathers additional information to determine if a site visit is needed. The team also connects with campus partners and the reportee to share next steps.
  • A survey of the area of concern may be conducted and outside agencies may be contacted for assistance.
  • The building coordinator or the facility liaison of the space is informed of the process and building notifications are sent if there are any major updates or steps to be taken.
  • EHS, Facilities and others collaborate on abatement and material removal as needed.
  • The space is properly cleaned of debris and materials before being reopened for use.
  • EHS records any actions taken and distributes any necessary final notifications.
