Why Do A Hazard Review

Laboratory activities and processes of a more hazardous nature require a Hazard Review, a systematic evaluation of the hazards and risks culminating in the identification and
implementation of controls designed to minimize the potential for adverse events.

It’s a sad reality that serious incidents resulting in physical harm and property damage continue to be more common in academic research laboratories than in private sector laboratories.

Subjecting your planned or existing process to a Hazard Review seeks to ensure that
all foreseeable paths to an adverse event are identified and controlled.

Conducting A Hazard Review

  • The EH&S Equipment Safety Engineer will contact you about proposed work
  • EH&S may call for a more formal review meeting for complex or highly hazardous processes

Using A Hazard Review

  • Training of new researchers who plan to inherit and/or continue the work in some fashion is one example of a useful application of this material.
  • Management of Change: Any change to the process that may increase the risk of an adverse event should be recorded in the SOP and subjected to an evaluation to ensure risks are controlled.
