Pollution, Prevention & Reporting

We are committed to protecting local waterways by preventing contaminated stormwater from entering the storm sewer system, lakes, and streams. To support this effort, all campus stormwater outfalls are inspected at least twice per year to identify and address potential sources of pollution. In addition, University Facilities staff respond promptly to reports of spills or illicit discharges on campus. Their response includes cleanup, source investigation, and, when necessary, repairs to reduce the risk of future incidents.

Members of the campus community are encouraged to report any suspected spills or discharges affecting soil or surface waters by calling 919-515-3000.

The Pollution Prevention and Goodhouse Keeping program is designed to minimize the impact of daily campus operations on stormwater quality. This comprehensive approach includes employee training, routine maintenance, regular inspections, and careful management of materials and waste. Key activities include waste reduction and recycling, proper pesticide and herbicide application, hazardous waste management, parking lot upkeep, and ongoing maintenance of stormwater infrastructure.

These practices are carried out by University Facilities and Environmental Health and Safety staff to ensure that campus operations remain environmentally responsible and protective of local water resources.
