Occupational Medicine

Occupational Medicine Environmental Health and Safety, in partnership with Campus Health, provides occupational medicine services to NC State faculty and staff.

What Occupational Medicine Offers NC State Employees

If you are an NC State employee, it may be recommended or required that you participate in medical surveillance based upon the type of work you perform, your work environment and the potential for hazardous exposure at work. Examples of conditions that may require medical surveillance are respiratory use, loud noise, international travel, contact with animals, or the exposure to lead, Hepatitis B, rabies, or organophosphate/pesticide sprays.

The first step is to visit the Medical Surveillance webpage to access the required form(s). completion of the forms will require your supervisor’s approval. Occupational Medicine coordinates the exams for respirator use, hearing protection, diving physicals and nuclear operators (some exams are performed offsite, if necessary). Personnel who work with animals, living or dead, may require  medical surveillance, to minimize the health and safety risk of contact with animal living quarters, viable tissues, body fluids or wastes.

How to Make an Appointment

If you need to arrange an appointment, please call 919-513-0277 and speak to the Occupational Medicine Program Coordinator. At Campus Health, Class I respirator and audio exams are provided Tuesday and Friday mornings by appointment. Lab work and immunizations are provided Monday through Friday, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. by appointment. We will work with you to schedule any types of services you may need (e.g., Class III respirator exams, diving physicals, etc.).

Costs

You will not need to pay out of pocket for these exams or tests. After your exam, your supervisor will receive recommendations for what is necessary to protect you while performing your job responsibilities. Medical information is not shared with your supervisor.
