• Employees must receive training prior to being assigned tasks that require PPE
  • Prior to performing tasks that require PPE, employees must demonstrate an understanding of the training and the ability to use the PPE properly.

Training Shall include the following:

  • The hazards that have been identified during the hazard assessment
  • When PPE is to be worn and the specific PPE to be worn including specific applicable elements. For example: type, material, size, style, length, color, and ratings
  • How PPE is properly fitted, donned, doffed, adjusted, and worn
  • The limitations of the PPE
  • The proper care, maintenance, inspection, useful life, and disposal of the PPE.

Records Information and Retention

  • Training records for each employee must include the following.
    • Name of the trainer
    • Name of the employee receiving training
    • Date of training,
    • Specific types of PPE covered during the training
  • Records can be maintained at the departmental level. Reporter courses are maintained in Reporter

Retraining Requirements

  • When there is a reason to believe that an employee using PPE does not have the understanding or skill required to use the PPE safely or properly, the employee must be retrained before being allowed to perform work requiring PPE.
  • Retraining is also required when changes in the workplace render previous training obsolete, or when the type of PPE changes.

EHPS-OS106  Conducting An Effective PPE Hazard Assessment 

Required For: This course is recommended for all University employees

Course Description: The training is designed to cover how to conduct an effective PPE Hazard Assessment.  The course will cover what and when is a PPE hazard assessment required.  How to conduct a PPE Hazard assessment, PPE selection guidelines and roles and responsibilities will also be covered.

 EHPS-OS100 Personal Protective Equipment Fundamentals

Required For: Employees who are required to wear PPE as part of their job

Course Description: This course is recommended for all University employees.

EHPS-OS104 – Personal Protective Equipment and Clothing for Electrical Safety (Classroom Training)

Required For: Employees who work on or repair electrical equipment or may be exposed to electrical energy, and their supervisor.

Course Description: This course covers the general requirements for Electrical Personal Protective Equipment, including shock protective and arc-resistant (AR) clothing. This course covers how to select and use electrical PPE for specific hazards and tasks and how to maintain, inspect, and test electrical PPE.

 

EHPS-OH100 Respirator Training

Required For: This training is required for individuals required to wear respiratory protection.

Course Description:  This training is a fundamental level of information and requires fit testing before wearing respiratory protection equipment.

 

EHPS-OH101 Respirator Training Annual Refresher

Required For: This training is required for individuals required to wear respiratory protection

Course Description: This training is intended for individuals who wear respiratory protection for work or research.   This training is a fundamental level of information and requires fit testing before wearing respiratory protection equipment.

 

EHPS-OS302 Fall Prevention    (Classroom Training)

Required For: This training is required for individuals who wear or use personal fall protection equipment or who may be exposed to a fall hazard.

Course Description:This course is designed to teach the basic guidelines and methods of fall protection safety. The course will review fall hazards, fall hazard evaluation and fall hazard controls. Hands on training on fall protection equipment will be covered in the course.

Note: This course has a waitlist and is taught as needed.

 

 EHPS-OH200 Hearing Conservation Awareness Training

Required For:   All University employees who are exposed to noise levels equal to or greater than an 8-hour time weighted average of 85 decibels must be included in NCSU Hearing Conservation Program (HCP) which is required under OSHA’s Occupational Noise Exposure Standard, 1910.95

 Course Description: A key element of the HCP is annual training on hearing conservation. The training program includes effects of noise on hearing; the purpose of hearing protectors, and instruction on their selection, fitting, use, and care; and the purpose and explanation of audiometric testing.
